TASDAG – Stravinsky & ‘The Rite of Spring’
Paris 1913 and ‘The Rite of Spring‘ premiere
The October Lecture from the Arts Society of Dumfries and Galloway (TASDAG) is set to captivate and enthral a wide range of people from across the region. For musicians and artists, dance and ballet fans, the story of the premiere of Stravinsky’s ‘Rite of Spring’ in Paris in 1913 is truly fascinating. The premiere attracted a huge audience to that glittering occasion in Paris. With Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and Igor Stravinsky’s latest composition sharing the honours on that memorable evening.
However, the occasion is possibly better known for the near riot that erupted at the premiere, thanks to an audience that showed little restraint in their reactions, the occasion ensured that Stravinsky and Diaghilev would achieve fame and notoriety in equal measure.
The Guest Lecturer, Sandy Burnett, examines the build-up to the premiere, including a look at the original costumes, excerpts from the inventive score and explores what divided opinions on that fateful night.
The Arts Society is delighted to welcome Sandy, one of the UK’s most versatile music commentators, enjoying a career that combines broadcasting, performing and lecturing.
With a CV that includes working as music director for the RSC, National Theatre and in London’s West End, Sandy Burnett was one of BBC 3’s core presenters for ten years. He has also enjoyed time as a double-bassist on the London jazz scene.
The monthly TASDAG Lectures take place on the second Tuesday of the month, and the Rite of Spring event is on October 14th at 11.00am in the Gilchrist Room. Easterbrook Hall, The Crichton, DG1 4TA (Coffee and Tea from 10.30am)
