The Curious Life and Films of Alfred Hitchcock – a double helping
The January offering from The Arts Society Dumfries and Galloway (TASDAG) will be a lecture and a film; a double helping of suspense and intrigue. The morning lecture, about that most renowned master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock, will be of interest to movie buffs and classic crime fiction fans alike. And the second helping of suspense will be the afternoon film, that Hitchcock classic, ‘North by Northwest’. Known to many from its regular screenings on television, it is nevertheless one movie that is best viewed on the large screen, if only for the famous ‘crop-duster’ scene and that vast emptiness of land around the film’s hero, Roger O. Thornhill, played by Cary Grant.
For the morning Lecture, TASDAG is delighted to welcome Guest Lecturer, Dr Colin Shindler. Doctor Shindler has been lecturing on American and British social and cultural history for over 30 years, including 20 years at Cambridge University. He has also had a wide-ranging career as a writer and producer in television, radio and film.
The monthly TASDAG lecture takes place on the second Tuesday of the month, and the Hitchcock Lecture is on January 13th 2026 at 11.00am in the Easterbrook Hall, the Crichton, DG1 4TA (Coffee and tea from 10.30am)
The afternoon film will be screened at the Robert Burns Centre Film Theatre at 2.00pm. (Admission £8.00)
For this double-bill day, TASDAG will be pleased to also welcome folks to Easterbrook Bistro for lunch at 12.30. (£12.00)
