Remembering Together Dumfries and Galloway: Tree Planting at The Crichton

Remembering Together Dumfries and Galloway is a region-wide project marking the impact of the pandemic as part of a Community Covid Memorial with the planting of over 400 native species trees. The project is led by DG Unlimited, Dumfries and Galloway Council and greenspace Scotland, and funded by the Scottish Government.

Commissioned artists t s Beall and Katie Anderson are working with communities across Dumfries and Galloway to collaboratively design and plant a Dispersed Memorial Forest across five sites in Castle Douglas, Dumfries, Moffat, Sanquhar, and Stranraer.

In Dumfries, The Crichton Estate is one of two sites selected for the project, alongside The Mountainhall Treatment Centre. Remembering Together Dumfries and Galloway will be working in partnership with The Crichton Trust and NHS D&G. Tree planting will take place across several smaller locations across the two sites on dates between 26th February and 1st March.

Volunteers and members of the community are invited to take part in the tree planting in their local area. If you would like to be involved, please get in touch with the project artists via the following online form: https://bit.ly/CovidMemorialDG–GetInvolved

There are additional opportunities for groups and individuals to take part in community launch events taking place in May-June, so please be in touch if there are other areas you might like to contribute. Get in touch with the same online form.

More information about Remembering Together Dumfries and Galloway

The tree planting plans for The Dispersed Memorial Forest have been co-developed for Remembering Together Dumfries and Galloway by artists t s Beall and Katie Anderson, working with community groups and partners across the region. This is part of the Scotland-wide development of memorials which will honour those we have lost, mark what has changed in our lives, and preserve the best of what we learned and created together during the COVID pandemic. Artists and creative organisations have been commissioned in each of Scotland’s 32 local authority areas, and the memorials created in each area will be locally co-designed and unique to each area.

Alongside the tree planting in Dumfries and Galloway, there are also plans for sculptural markers at each of the site locations, community gatherings to mark the launch of the project across the region, and an archive of stories and experiences.
