The Crichton Quarter Heat Network Project
The Crichton Trust has over the last couple of years secured funding from The UK Community Renewal Fund and the Scottish Government’s Heat Network Support Unit to assess the feasibility of a Neighbourhood Energy Scheme and has established The Crichton Quarter Local Heat Energy Network Project.
They have tested the viability of using the Dumfries Basin Aquifer to provide an accessible supply of low-grade heat that could be utilised using renewable technologies as a source of renewable heat for The Crichton Quarter. The heat network is being developed with the aim to distribute affordable low-carbon heat to key buildings in The Crichton Quarter of Dumfries helping to ensure that these buildings have a long-term and sustainable future. The Crichton Quarter Heat Network is being developed in collaboration with NHS Dumfries and Galloway, Dumfries and Galloway College and Dumfries And Galloway Council. It has been supported by SOSE, The Scottish Government’s Heat Network Support Unit, Zero Wate Scotland and Scottish Futures Trust.
Due to the rising and fluctuating gas prices as a result of various external factors, The Crichton Trust has accelerated its programme for the development of a Local Heat Network for The Crichton Quarter with the intention of increasing energy security, reducing the cost of heating and power and to progress with their goal of becoming carbon neutral.
The Crichton Trust is therefore keen to explore the full potential for heat network(s) for The Crichton Quarter, for both the short and long term and has completed detailed feasibility studies over the last few years.
