‘Windsor, a castle restored’ – the fire of 1992 and the restoration

Lecturer: Barbara Askew

On November 20th 1992 the Great Fire of Windsor caused £40m of damage to the fabric of Windsor Castle.  This lecture describes the devastation wrought by the Fire and explains how the restoration of the Castle, the challenges faced by the architects and craftsmen involved and how the solutions they arrived at combined traditional skills with modern technology.

Windsor Castle is said to be the Queen’s favourite home, and the restoration after the Fire has made the present reign, along with those of King Charles II and King George IV, a key period in the Castle’s post-medieval development.
