Prosecuting Crime

James Wolffe is recognised as one of Scotland’s leading legal experts and we are delighted to welcome this distinguished Galloway man to The Crichton. Brought up in Gatehouse of Fleet, he went to primary school there and then on to Kirkcudbright Academy. He studied at the University of Edinburgh and then went up to Balliol College Oxford where he became a Bachelor in Civil Law. He was called to the Scottish Bar in 1992 and took silk in 2007.

He was First Standing Junior Counsel to the Scottish Ministers from 2002 to 2007, the same year he was appointed Queen’s Counsel. From 2007 to 2010 he served as Advocate Depute. Called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2013, James was elected Dean of the Faculty of Advocates in 2014.  He was appointed Lord Advocate on the 1^st June 2016. The Lord Advocate is the senior law officer of the Scottish Government and is the head of the system of prosecution and investigation of deaths in Scotland.
