Alexander McCall Smith was formerly Professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh and is now Professor Emeritus.  He served as vice chairman of the Human Genetics Commission of the UK, chairman of the British Medical Journal Ethics Committee and was a member of the International Bioethics Commission of UNESCO.

Sandy has written more than a hundred books including specialist academic titles and children’s books. He is best known for The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, set in Botswana, which has been translated into 46 languages and has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. The series has been the subject of a film and TV series that has been broadcast all round the world. He is also the author of The Sunday Philosophy Series and 44 Scotland Street.
