There is far more to Christmas than Santa Claus…

Strange, wondrous, perplexing, alarming; mischievous trolls descending on villages, and terrifying demons, the bane of naughty children; punishment and presents and traditional incarnations of the Yuletide Spirit… some of the fascinating Christmas customs from Iceland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Austria and elsewhere… will be brought to life in this journey through the rich folklore surrounding the Festive Season. Illustrated with paintings and engravings depicting some of these mythical creatures, as well as photographs of traditional costume and celebration, this lecture is the perfect introduction to winter.

Tim Stimson‘s involvement in art began with the practical; for a number of years he was a professional painter and ceramicist in Scotland and Wales, before returning to university to study literature and the history of art, then training to teach adults. For the last 20 years he has been a freelance cultural art historian, specialising in 17th and 19th century art and society.

Guests are warmly welcomed at lectures, in person or online. Guest tickets are £10 and are available on the door, on the TASDAG website or at Midsteeple Box Office.
