TASDAG – Insiders/Outsiders and cultural influencers

The November Lecture from The Arts Society Dumfries and Galloway (TASDAG) will reflect a source of inspiration which has made a unique and priceless contribution to cultural life in Britain for almost a century.   The Lecture will explore the visual arts created by some of the thousands of people who were located to these shores during the displacement and trauma of Nazi-dominated Europe in the 1930s and 1940s.  Their dislocation, and the challenges they faced, were barely known during those two decades of global horror, but despite that they have made a lasting contribution to British culture.

The Arts Society is delighted to host Guest Lecturer, Monica Bohm-Duchen, who will examine the nature of this contribution, with a focus on not only the familiar names of Gombrich, and Kokoschka, but also lesser-known figures including Joseph Herman and Albert Reuss.   Monica is a London-based freelance lecturer, writer and exhibition organiser.  She has lectured at all of the well-known galleries and institutes, including the Tate, the National Gallery and the Royal Academy of Arts.    Her books include ‘Insiders/Outsiders  – Refugees from Nazi Europe and their contribution to British Visual Culture.’  Monica is the initiator and creative director of the nationwide Insiders/Outsiders Arts Festival.

The monthly TASDAG Lectures take place on the second Tuesday of the month, and the Insiders/Outsiders Lecture is on November 11th 2025 at 11.00am in the Gilchrist Room. Easterbrook Hall, The Crichton, DG1 4TA (Coffee and Tea from 10.30am)
