Tours and Trails

The Crichton is open to the public all year round. With 85 acres of parkland boasting a rock garden, complete with many specimen trees and plants, arboretum and exquisite rose gardens, the estate offers a stunning location to take a leisurely stroll, walk the dog or enjoy a picnic. The Crichton also features playing fields and an abundance of open spaces which are great for a range of activities including walking, cycling, jogging and outdoor events. Check out details of our tours and trails below

Heritage Walks

The Crichton has a rich and fascinating heritage stemming back over a hundred years. Our Heritage Walking Routes are a great way to enjoy a fun and educational tour of the estate. The walks pick out the points of interest across The Crichton and can take between 30 minutes and an hour to walk. To keep the kids entertained, pick up one of our walking route leaflets which includes a quiz with questions which can be answered from information boards along the route. Shorter sections between 10 and 20 minutes can be found at the University Campus, Business Park, Crichton Hall and gardens. The walk is fairly level, although, in the vicinity of Crichton Hall and Campbell House, there is a short incline of steps which can be avoided by taking the shortcuts.

Play, Walk, Run or Cycle

The Crichton is a great location for fitness and healthy living in the community with local sports and football clubs regularly using the playing fields. Crichton Parkrun also takes place at The Crichton every Saturday morning. We encourage free use of the open spaces for those looking to get active or have fun. With cycling such a popular pastime in Dumfries and Galloway, the roads and pathways make for a scenic cycle route or training ground through the estate or as part of a longer route through Dumfries.
