Practical joker or serious artist?  Pulling in international awards, or pulling the wool over our eyes?

Damien Hirst is the most famous British artist since Henry Moore.  However in his home country he is a deeply divisive figure.  While he’s one of only a few modern artists whose activities regularly make the papers, critics accuse him of not making proper art at all. But, as lecturer David Worthington will demonstrate, there is a deeply serious side to Hirst’s work: his influence on contemporary art is significant, influential and under-rated.

David Worthington has been drawn to abstract sculpture since seeing a Barbara Hepworth in a school history book aged 10. He studied fine art in London, Barcelona and New York and as well as his active work as a sculptor, he also curates and writes about art.  He has carried out public commissions in the UK, America and Japan, and has had numerous solo shows across the UK.

David is a Fellow of The Royal Society of Sculptors, and was Vice President in 2010-13.He was shortlisted for the Jerwood Sculpture Prize in 2009.
