A graduate of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Nigel hails from Galawater in the Borders. He worked in mainly farm animal veterinary practice in Rogart, Sutherland before returning to the Borders to farm in partnership with his father and now with his sons on a 500 hectare upland unit with 180 cows, 800 ewes and some cropping. He worked with MAFF based in Dumfries during the Foot and Mouth outbreak and from 2001 became involved in the NFU Scotland finally becoming President and standing down in 2015.
He is a past chair of the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group and Board member of SRUC and SAC Commercial. He is presently a Board member of the Moredun Institute and Chair of Livestock Health Scotland.
